Item 1 rose by

6.1% a year

1.8x the price in 10 years. At this pace the price doubles every 11.8 years.

The yearly rise is the compound rate that takes the old price to the new one. Calculated in your browser. Nothing is stored.

Your inflation is personal

The headline inflation number is an average. Your own cost of living depends on what you spend on, and some of those things climb far faster than others. A few percent a year sounds small, but compounded over a decade it can nearly double a price.

Use the rates you find here when you plan. A goal like a child's education should be projected with the rate school fees actually rise at, not the general average.

Frequently asked questions

How is the yearly rise calculated?

It is the compound annual growth rate between the two prices: (price now / price then) raised to 1 / years, minus 1. That is the steady yearly increase that turns the old price into the new one.

Why does my inflation differ from the official number?

Official inflation (CPI) is an average across a basket of goods. What you actually pay depends on what you buy. School fees, healthcare, and rent often rise much faster than the average, so your personal inflation can be well above the headline figure.

Why compare my salary too?

Add your salary then and now as an item. If it rose slower than the things you spend on, your real income has shrunk even though the number went up.

What does doubles every N years mean?

At a steady yearly rise, prices double after a fixed number of years. At 6% that is about 12 years; at 11% it is under 7. It is a quick way to feel how much a rate really matters.
