Frequently asked questions
What is CAGR?
Compound Annual Growth Rate is the constant yearly rate that would grow your initial value to your final value over the period. It answers 'what steady annual return does this add up to?' even when the real path was bumpy.
How is CAGR different from absolute return?
Absolute return is the total point-to-point growth ignoring time. CAGR annualizes it. Doubling your money is 100% absolute, but that is roughly 26% CAGR over 3 years or 7% CAGR over 10 years. CAGR lets you compare investments held for different periods.
When should I use CAGR versus XIRR?
Use CAGR when there is a single amount invested once and a single final value. Use XIRR when money went in or out at multiple dates, like a SIP. For one lump sum they give the same answer.
