The power of investing monthly
A SIP works because of two things: consistency and compounding. By investing every month you buy more units when markets are low and fewer when they are high, which smooths out your average cost. And because each instalment keeps compounding, the money you invested in year one is doing far more work by year ten than the money you add later.
The gap between what you invest and what you end with is the returns bar below. Over long periods that gap is usually much larger than the amount you actually put in, which is the whole case for starting early and staying invested.
Frequently asked questions
What is a SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is investing a fixed amount at regular intervals, usually monthly, into a mutual fund. It spreads your investing across market highs and lows and builds a habit without needing to time the market.
How is SIP return calculated?
Each instalment compounds for the time it stays invested, so earlier instalments grow more than later ones. This calculator compounds every instalment monthly at your expected annual return and adds them up to a projected future value.
What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up (or top-up) SIP increases your instalment by a set percentage every year, usually to match salary growth. Even a small annual step-up meaningfully raises the final corpus because the extra amounts also compound. Set it in the step-up field.
Are these returns guaranteed?
No. The projection assumes a constant annual return, but real mutual fund returns vary year to year and can be negative. Treat the result as an estimate for planning, not a promise. Use a conservative return assumption.
